Light Requirements
- Ideal: Bright, indirect light. It thrives in a space with filtered light, such as near an east or north-facing window.
- Tolerable: It can adapt to lower light conditions, but its growth may slow, and the leaf patterns might become less vibrant.
- Avoid: Direct sunlight, which can cause leaf burn or fading.

Watering
- Frequency: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry.
- Method: Water deeply, allowing excess water to drain out of the pot. Make sure the pot has proper drainage to prevent root rot.
- Tip: Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater if possible, as calatheas are sensitive to the chemicals and salts found in tap water.

Humidity
- Ideal: High humidity (above 60%).
- Tips:
- Increase humidity by using a humidifier, misting the plant regularly, or placing it near other plants to create a more humid microclimate.
- A pebble tray with water underneath the pot can also help raise humidity.
- Avoid: Low humidity or dry air, as this can cause the leaves to curl or develop brown edges.

Temperature
- Ideal range: 65-80°F (18-27°C).
- Avoid: Temperatures below 60°F (15°C), sudden temperature changes, and exposure to cold drafts or heaters. Keep it in a stable, warm environment for optimal growth.

Soil
- Use a well-draining, rich potting mix. A peat-based mix designed for tropical plants or African violets works well.
- Make sure the soil retains moisture without becoming waterlogged.

Fertilizing
- Frequency: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Type: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Avoid: Over-fertilizing, which can lead to leaf burn. Skip fertilizing during fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down.

Pruning
- Remove any yellow, brown, or damaged leaves by trimming them at the base to encourage healthy new growth and maintain the plant’s appearance.
- Pruning also helps prevent the plant from wasting energy on unhealthy foliage.

Repotting
- When: Repot every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound.
- How: Choose a pot one size larger, and refresh the soil with a well-draining potting mix to encourage healthy growth.

Pests and Problems
- Pests: Calatheas are susceptible to common houseplant pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Regularly inspect the leaves, particularly the undersides, and treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
- Leaf Curling or Browning: This can occur due to low humidity, underwatering, or the use of hard tap water. Adjust humidity and water quality as needed.
- Yellow Leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to yellowing leaves. Ensure the soil is moist but not soggy, and that the pot has good drainage.

Toxicity
- Non-toxic: These are non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe option for homes with animals or children.

Cleaning
- Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust, allowing the plant to absorb light more effectively and keeping the foliage looking fresh and vibrant.

Dormancy
- In the winter, the Calathea may enter a dormant phase where its growth slows. Reduce watering and stop fertilizing during this period, resuming normal care in the spring.

Leaf Movement (Nyctinasty)

- Like other calatheas, this one folds its leaves upward at night and opens them during the day, a fascinating movement known as "nyctinasty." This behavior is normal and indicates the plant is healthy and responding to light changes.
