Light:
• ZZ plants thrive in bright, indirect light but can tolerate low light conditions.
• Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. They are particularly well-suited for areas with filtered light.
Watering:
• Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. ZZ plants are drought-tolerant and prefer to be underwatered rather than overwatered.
• Water less frequently in the winter when the plant’s growth slows. Typically, watering every 2-3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) is sufficient.
• Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a standard houseplant soil with added perlite or sand to improve drainage.
• Avoid heavy soils that retain moisture, as this can lead to root rot.
Humidity:
• ZZ plants can tolerate a wide range of humidity levels, including dry indoor air.
• They do not require high humidity but will benefit from occasional misting in very dry conditions.
Temperature:
• ZZ plants prefer temperatures between 60°F and 75°F.
• They can tolerate temperatures as low as 45°F but should be protected from frost and extreme cold.
Fertilizer:
• Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks.
• No need to fertilize in fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
Repotting:
• Repot your ZZ plant every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound.
• Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger in diameter than the current one and use fresh potting mix.
Pests:
• ZZ plants are generally pest-resistant, but watch out for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale.
• If you notice pests, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth or treat them with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Toxicity:
• Toxic to pets and humans if ingested, so keep it out of reach of children and animals. The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation.
Extra Tips:
• Dust the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to keep them clean and help the plant photosynthesize effectively.
• ZZ plants are very forgiving and can bounce back from neglect, making them perfect for beginners or busy individuals.
• Be patient, as ZZ plants grow slowly, especially in lower light conditions.
