Cactus 4"

Cactus 4"

Light
- Cacti love bright, direct sunlight. Place your cactus in a location that gets at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- If growing indoors, a sunny south or west-facing window is ideal. For outdoor cacti, ensure they are in a spot that receives full sun.
- Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth.

Watering
- Cacti are drought-tolerant, so they require infrequent watering. Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry, typically every 2-4 weeks depending on the environment.
- During the active growing season (spring and summer), you can water a bit more often, but still, let the soil dry between waterings.
- In winter, cacti enter dormancy, and watering should be reduced to once a month or even less.
- Overwatering is the main cause of issues like root rot, so it’s better to underwater than overwater.

Humidity
- Cacti prefer dry conditions and do not require high humidity. In fact, they thrive in low humidity environments.
- Avoid misting cacti, as excess moisture can lead to fungal issues.

Temperature
- Cacti do best in warm temperatures. Ideal temperatures are between 65-85°F.
- They can tolerate higher temperatures if given adequate light and occasional watering, but they don't do well in temperatures below 50°F
- If growing your cactus outdoors, bring it inside if temperatures drop significantly.

Soil
- Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. If using regular potting soil, mix in sand, perlite, or small rocks to improve drainage.
- The soil should be fast-draining to prevent water from sitting around the roots, which can cause rot.

Fertilizer
- Cacti don’t require much fertilizer, but you can feed them during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer once a month.
- Avoid fertilizing during the winter dormancy period.

Pruning and Cleaning
- Cacti don’t need regular pruning, but you can remove any dead or damaged sections with a sharp, sterilized knife.
- Dust may accumulate on the cactus spines over time. Use a soft brush to gently clean the spines and keep the plant looking its best.

Repotting
- Cacti grow slowly and typically need to be repotted every 2-3 years or when they outgrow their pot.
- Repot in the spring or early summer, using a pot with drainage holes and fresh cactus soil mix.
- Be careful when handling the plant—use thick gloves or wrap the cactus in newspaper to avoid injury from the spines.

Pests
- Common pests include mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. If pests are spotted, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent infestations.

Winter Dormancy
- Cacti typically enter a dormant period in winter. During this time, reduce watering to once a month or less and stop fertilizing.
- Keep the plant in a cool, dry place with bright light.

Toxicity
- Most cacti are non-toxic, but some may have sharp spines that can cause injury. Handle with care and keep out of reach of pets and children.

Extra Tips:
- Avoid overwatering: Cacti are highly adapted to arid conditions, so they are more likely to suffer from too much water than too little.
- Ensure proper drainage: Always use pots with drainage holes and fast-draining soil to prevent water buildup.
