African Milktree 6”

African Milktree 6”

The African milk tree (Euphorbia trigona) is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant succulent that thrives indoors and outdoors in warm climates. Here’s how to care for it properly:

Light

• Prefers bright, indirect light or full sun.

• Can tolerate some shade but may grow leggy without enough light.

• If moving it outdoors, acclimate it slowly to avoid sunburn.

Watering

• Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.

• In summer, water every 2–3 weeks; in winter, reduce to once a month or less.

• Overwatering can cause root rot, so ensure proper drainage.

Soil

• Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil.

• Adding sand or perlite improves drainage.

Temperature & Humidity

• Thrives in temperatures above 60°F

• Keep away from drafts, cold windows, and air conditioning.

• Prefers low to moderate humidity.

Fertilizing

• Feed with a diluted cactus fertilizer every month during spring and summer.

• No fertilization is needed in fall and winter.

Pruning & Growth

• Can grow up to 6–8 feet tall indoors.

• Prune if it gets too tall, using gloves since the sap is toxic.

Propagation

• Easily propagated from stem cuttings.

• Allow cuttings to dry for a few days before planting in dry soil.

Toxicity

• The white sap is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes.

• Keep away from pets and children.
