Agave plants are hardy succulents known for their striking rosette shape and low-maintenance care needs. Here’s how to care for them:
Light:
• Full sun is best (at least 6 hours per day).
• Can tolerate partial shade but grows best in bright, direct light.
Watering:
• Drought-tolerant; water sparingly.
• Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings.
• In summer, water every 1-2 weeks; in winter, reduce to once a month or less.
Soil:
• Requires well-draining, sandy, or gritty soil (a cactus or succulent mix works well).
• Avoid moisture-retentive soils.
Temperature & Humidity:
• Thrives in warm temperatures (65-85°F / 18-29°C).
• Some varieties can tolerate cooler temperatures but should be protected from frost.
• Prefers dry conditions; no extra humidity needed.
Fertilizer:
• Minimal feeding needed; use a diluted cactus fertilizer in spring and summer once every 1-2 months.
• No fertilizer in fall and winter.
Pruning & Maintenance:
• Remove dead or damaged leaves carefully (wear gloves, as some species have sharp edges).
• Slow-growing and requires minimal pruning.
Propagation:
• Easily propagated through pups (offsets) that grow at the base of mature plants.
• Remove and replant in dry soil.
Toxicity:
• Mildly toxic if ingested; sap may cause skin irritation. Handle with care.
