Alocasia Frydek Variegated 4"

Alocasia Frydek Variegated 4"

The Variegated Alocasia Frydek (Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek’ Variegata) is a rare and stunning plant with velvety, deep green leaves splashed with creamy-white variegation. While absolutely gorgeous, it's also a bit of a diva! Here’s how to keep it thriving.

🌞 Light:

Bright, indirect light is essential! Too little light can cause it to lose variegation, while too much direct sun can scorch its delicate leaves. A south- or east-facing window with sheer curtains is ideal. If indoors, consider a grow light to maintain its vibrant variegation.

💧 Water:

Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Let the top 1-2 inches dry out before watering again.
Avoid overwatering—this plant is prone to root rot. Use filtered or dechlorinated water if possible to prevent mineral buildup.

✔️ Spring & Summer: Water more frequently (every 5-7 days).
✔️ Fall & Winter: Reduce watering to prevent rot (every 10-14 days).

🌱 Soil:

Use a well-draining, chunky mix to prevent root rot. A good mix includes:
✔️ 40% orchid bark
✔️ 30% peat moss or coco coir
✔️ 20% perlite
✔️ 10% worm castings for nutrients

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity:

Prefers warm temps: 65-80°F (18-27°C)—avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes.
High humidity (60-80%) is a must! If your home is dry, use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting.

Crispy leaf edges? Your humidity is too low!

🌿 Fertilizer:

Feed every 4-6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer (like 10-10-10) at half strength.
Avoid over-fertilizing—too much can damage the roots. Skip feeding in fall and winter.

📏 Growth & Support:

Alocasia Frydek Variegated is a moderate to fast grower if conditions are ideal.
Since it grows from corms (bulbs), you may find baby plants popping up—these can be separated and propagated!

✂️ Pruning & Propagation:

Trim yellowing or damaged leaves to encourage new growth.
To propagate, separate corms (baby bulbs) from the mother plant and plant them in moist sphagnum moss or soil.

🐛 Pests & Problems:

Pests: Watch out for spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs. Wipe leaves with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Drooping leaves? Likely underwatering or low humidity.
Yellowing leaves? Overwatering or too little light.
Losing variegation? Needs more light!
