Light Requirements
• Calathea Burle Marx prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves and cause the colors to fade.
• Avoid placing it in low light, as this can lead to slower growth and dull-looking leaves. An east-facing window or a spot with filtered sunlight is ideal.
Watering
• Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and avoid letting the soil dry out completely.
• Calatheas are sensitive to tap water chemicals like chlorine and fluoride, which can cause brown leaf edges. Use distilled or filtered water, or let tap water sit out overnight to allow chemicals to evaporate.
Humidity and Temperature
• Calatheas love high humidity, ideally around 60% or higher. If the air is dry, mist the plant regularly, use a humidifier, or place it on a humidity tray to keep its environment moist.
• Keep the temperature between 65-80°F. Avoid drafts and temperature fluctuations, as Calatheas are sensitive to cold.
Soil
• Use a well-draining potting mix that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. A mix of peat, perlite, and potting soil works well for Calatheas.
• Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom, as this can lead to root rot.
Fertilizing
• Feed Calathea Burle Marx with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
• Avoid over-fertilizing, which can burn the roots. No fertilizer is needed during the fall and winter months.
Pruning and Leaf Care
• Prune away any yellow or brown leaves to keep the plant looking healthy and vibrant. Trim brown edges if they appear, but be careful not to cut into the healthy part of the leaf.
• Wipe the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep the plant’s natural shine.
Repotting
• Repot every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that’s only slightly larger than the current one to avoid excess soil, which can retain too much moisture.
• Repotting in spring is ideal, as it gives the plant fresh nutrients and space to grow.
Pests and Common Issues
• Calatheas are generally resistant to pests but may attract spider mites or aphids in dry environments. Regular misting can help prevent pests.
