Calathea Orbifolia 10”
Calathea Orbifolia 10”
Light:
• Ideal: Bright, indirect light.
• Tolerable: Low light, but avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves and cause fading of the beautiful variegation.
• Avoid placing it in very dark areas, which can slow down growth.
Watering:
• Consistent moisture is key. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, but do not let the plant sit in water.
• Use filtered or distilled water, as Calathea Orbifolia is sensitive to chemicals like chlorine and fluoride in tap water. If using tap water, allow it to sit overnight to dissipate these chemicals.
• Water more frequently in the warmer months and reduce during the winter.
Humidity:
• Loves high humidity (60% or more). Dry air can cause the edges of the leaves to brown.
• Consider placing a humidifier near the plant or using a humidity tray. Misting can help, but avoid excessive misting which could lead to fungal issues.
• It thrives in bathrooms or kitchens where humidity is naturally higher.
Temperature:
• Ideal temperature range: 65-75°F
• Avoid cold drafts, sudden temperature changes, or temperatures below 60°F, as these can stress the plant.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with added perlite for aeration.
• Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Fertilizing:
• Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (diluted to half strength) once a month during spring and summer.
• Avoid over-fertilizing, as Calatheas are sensitive to salt buildup from fertilizers. Flush the soil occasionally to remove any excess salts.
Pruning:
• Remove yellow or damaged leaves as needed to encourage healthy growth.
• Regular pruning isn’t necessary, but cleaning the leaves gently with a damp cloth will keep them dust-free and healthy.
Repotting:
• Repot every 1-2 years, ideally in spring. Choose a pot slightly larger than the current one, and ensure it has drainage holes.
• Calathea Orbifolia prefers to be slightly root-bound, so don’t rush to repot unless roots are visibly growing out of the drainage holes.
Pests:
• Common pests include spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Regularly check for signs of pests, especially if humidity is low.
• Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Toxicity:
• Non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a great choice for households with animals or small children.
