Calathea Rattlesnake 6"

Calathea Rattlesnake 6"

Light
- Bright, indirect light is ideal for the Calathea Rattlesnake. It will thrive in areas with filtered light, like near a window with sheer curtains.
- Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and cause the vibrant patterns to fade.
- This plant can tolerate lower light conditions, but its growth may slow down, and the colors may not be as vibrant.

Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry.
- Filtered, distilled, or rainwater is preferred, as Calatheas are sensitive to fluoride, chlorine, and other chemicals in tap water, which can cause leaf tips to brown.
- Reduce watering in the winter months, but never let the soil dry out completely.

Humidity
- High humidity is essential for a healthy Calathea Rattlesnake. Aim for humidity levels between 60-80%.
- Regular misting, placing the plant on a humidity tray (a tray filled with water and pebbles), or using a humidifier will help maintain proper humidity levels.
- Bathrooms and kitchens, which are naturally more humid, can be ideal spots for this plant.
- Low humidity can cause the leaves to curl or develop brown edges, so monitor the air moisture, especially in winter.

Temperature
- The ideal temperature range is 65-80°F. Avoid exposing the plant to temperatures below 60°F
- Protect the plant from cold drafts, air conditioners, and heating vents, as sudden temperature changes can cause stress.

Soil
- Use a well-draining potting mix with good moisture retention. A mix of standard potting soil with perlite or orchid bark will provide proper aeration and prevent waterlogging.
- Ensure that the pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

Fertilizer
- Feed the Calathea Rattlesnake every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer.
- Avoid over-fertilizing and stop feeding during fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down.

Pruning and Cleaning
- Remove any yellow or damaged leaves to encourage healthy growth and maintain a tidy appearance.
- Gently clean the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance the plant’s ability to photosynthesize.
- The plant’s leaves may occasionally move or fold at night (a characteristic of Calatheas), which is normal and part of their natural rhythm.

Repotting
- Repot your Calathea Rattlesnake every 1-2 years in spring, or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot each time to give the roots room to grow.
- Use fresh soil when repotting to provide the plant with fresh nutrients and prevent compaction.

Pests
- Calatheas can be prone to spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids, especially in dry conditions. Check the undersides of the leaves regularly for pests.
- If pests are present, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Keeping humidity high and ensuring good air circulation can help prevent infestations.

Humidity in Winter
- Indoor heating can dry out the air in winter, so it’s essential to maintain humidity levels. Use a humidifier or mist the plant more frequently during colder months.
- Avoid placing the plant near heat sources, as they can dry out the leaves.

Toxicity
- Calathea Rattlesnake is non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a great plant for households with animals or children.

Extra Tips:
- Rotate the plant every couple of weeks to ensure even growth, as it will naturally lean toward the light.
- Avoid overwatering: Let the top layer of soil dry slightly before watering to prevent root rot, but don’t let the soil dry out completely.
- Use clean water: Calathea plants are sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so using filtered or distilled water helps prevent leaf browning.
