Croton 4"
Light:
• Crotons love bright, indirect sunlight. The more light they get, the more vibrant their colors will be.
• They can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning, but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which may scorch the leaves.
• If your Croton isn’t getting enough light, the colors may fade, and the plant may become leggy.
Watering:
• Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Crotons like to be kept consistently moist but not soggy.
• Use lukewarm water, as cold water can shock the plant.
• Reduce watering in the fall and winter, but do not let the soil dry out completely.
Humidity:
• Crotons thrive in high humidity. If the air in your home is dry, mist the leaves regularly or place the plant on a tray of water and pebbles to boost humidity.
• A humidifier is a good investment if your home tends to be dry, especially in winter.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining potting mix. A standard potting soil mixed with perlite or sand works well.
• The soil should retain some moisture but drain excess water to prevent root rot.
Temperature:
• Crotons prefer warm temperatures between 60°F and 85°F
• They are sensitive to cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F. Keep them away from cold windows, air conditioners, or heat sources like radiators.
Fertilizer:
• Feed your Croton every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, liquid fertilizer.
• Reduce feeding in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
Repotting:
• Repot every 1-2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger in diameter.
• Refresh the soil with a well-draining potting mix to provide nutrients and improve drainage.
Pruning:
• Crotons benefit from occasional pruning to remove dead or damaged leaves and to encourage bushier growth.
• You can also pinch off the tips of new growth to promote a fuller shape.
Pests:
• Watch for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. These pests can cause yellowing or dropping leaves.
• Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil, and regularly inspect your plant for signs of trouble.
Leaf Drop:
• Crotons can be temperamental and may drop leaves when moved or exposed to sudden changes in environment, light, or temperature. This is normal, and the plant should bounce back once it acclimates to its new surroundings.
• Consistent care will help prevent further leaf drop.
Extra Tips:
• Rotate the Plant: To ensure even growth, rotate your Croton every few weeks so all sides receive sufficient light.
• Wipe the Leaves: Dust the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to keep them clean and allow them to absorb more light.
