Light:
• Bright, Indirect Light: Dracaena White Stripe prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate low light conditions. Too much direct sunlight can cause the leaf edges to burn or brown.
• Low Light Tolerance: While it can survive in low light, the growth will slow, and the variegation may become less pronounced.
Watering:
• Moderate Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Dracaena does not like to sit in soggy soil, so be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.
• Water Quality: Dracaena is sensitive to fluoride in tap water, which can cause brown leaf tips. Use filtered or distilled water, or let tap water sit out for 24 hours to allow chemicals to dissipate.
Humidity:
• Average Humidity: Dracaena White Stripe does well in average household humidity levels. If the air is particularly dry, you can mist the plant occasionally to prevent leaf tips from browning.
• Increased Humidity: If possible, aim for slightly higher humidity levels (around 40-50%) to keep the plant happy.
Temperature:
• Moderate Temperatures: Dracaena thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F. It should be protected from cold drafts, as temperatures below 50°F can cause damage.
Soil:
• Well-Draining Soil: Use a well-draining, loamy potting mix. A standard indoor plant mix with added perlite or sand for drainage works well.
• Good Drainage: Ensure the pot has drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.
Fertilizing:
• Monthly Feeding: Feed your Dracaena White Stripe with a balanced, liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). In fall and winter, reduce or stop fertilizing since the plant’s growth slows down.
• Diluted Fertilizer: Always dilute the fertilizer to half strength to avoid over-fertilizing, which can damage the plant.
Pruning:
• Remove Yellow or Brown Leaves: Trim any yellow or dead leaves to keep the plant looking fresh. Cut just above a leaf node or near the base with sterilized scissors.
• Control Height: Dracaena can grow quite tall indoors. If it gets too tall, you can trim the top to maintain your desired height, and new shoots will develop below the cut.
Repotting:
• Every 2-3 Years: Repot Dracaena every 2-3 years, or when the roots start to outgrow the pot. Spring is the best time to repot.
• Fresh Soil: Always use fresh potting soil when repotting to provide nutrients.
Pests:
• Common Pests: Dracaena can attract pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. If you notice any pests, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
• Regular Inspections: Check the undersides of the leaves regularly to catch pest issues early.
Toxicity:
• Toxic to Pets: Dracaena is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, so keep it out of reach of pets.
