Euphorbia lactea ‘Cristata’, also called the Coral Cactus, is a fascinating plant with a wavy, fan-like crest that looks like underwater coral! Though it resembles a cactus, it’s actually a Euphorbia, meaning it has slightly different care needs.
🌞 Light:
Bright, indirect light to full sun. It thrives in lots of light, so place it near a sunny window indoors (south- or west-facing) or in partial sun outdoors. Too much direct sun can scorch the plant, but too little will make it weak and leggy.
💧 Water:
Less is more! Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In summer, water every 2-3 weeks. In winter, cut back even more—maybe once a month. Overwatering is the #1 killer of this plant!
🌱 Soil:
Well-draining cactus/succulent mix is essential! You can mix:
✔️ 60% cactus soil
✔️ 30% perlite or pumice
✔️ 10% sand for extra drainage
Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity:
Prefers warm temperatures: 60-85°F (16-29°C). Keep it away from cold drafts and frost—temps below 50°F (10°C) can harm it.
It doesn’t need high humidity—normal household humidity is fine.
🌿 Fertilizer:
Feed once a month in spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer (like 10-10-10 or 5-10-10). Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when it's dormant.
📏 Growth & Support:
🌱 It’s a slow grower and usually stays compact (6-12 inches tall). If it gets top-heavy, use small stakes to support it.
🚨 Safety & Precautions:
Toxic sap! Euphorbia plants contain a milky white latex sap that can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested. Always wear gloves when handling or cutting it, and keep it away from pets and kids.
🐛 Pests & Problems:
Pests: Watch out for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
❌ Soft, mushy stem? Overwatering—let it dry out completely before watering again.
❌ Wrinkled or drooping? Underwatering—give it a deep soak.
Fun Fact!
Although it looks like a single plant, many Coral Cacti are actually grafted! The crest is Euphorbia lactea, while the base is usually Euphorbia neriifolia or another hardy Euphorbia species.
