Ficus Elastica Tineke 8"
Ficus Elastica Tineke 8"
Light:
• Bright, indirect light is ideal for Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ in the Rubber plant family. It can tolerate lower light conditions, but the variegation may diminish, and growth may slow down.
• Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
Watering:
• Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Ficus elastica prefers to be on the drier side, so avoid overwatering.
• Water less frequently in the winter when the plant is not actively growing, but do not let it completely dry out.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining potting mix. A standard houseplant mix combined with perlite or orchid bark for better drainage works well.
• Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Temperature:
• Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ prefers warm temperatures between 60-80°F
• Protect it from cold drafts and avoid exposing it to temperatures below 50°F
Humidity:
• This plant enjoys moderate humidity but can adapt to average household levels.
• If the air is particularly dry (especially in winter), consider misting the leaves or placing a humidifier nearby.
Fertilizing:
• Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
• Reduce fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
Pruning and Maintenance:
• Prune any dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy and encourage new growth.
• Regularly wipe down the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis.
Repotting:
• Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot with fresh potting mix.
• The best time to repot is in the spring when the plant is actively growing.
Propagation:
• Ficus elastica ‘Tineke’ can be propagated through stem cuttings. Take a cutting with a few leaves and place it in water or moist soil until roots develop.
• Ensure that the cutting has at least one node for successful rooting.
Pests:
• Keep an eye out for common pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
• Good air circulation around the plant can help prevent pest problems.
Toxicity:
• Ficus elastica is mildly toxic to pets and humans if ingested, so keep it out of reach of children and pets.
