Goldfish Plant 6"
Goldfish Plant 6"
Light:
• Goldfish plants thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct morning sunlight, but avoid intense, midday sun as it may scorch the leaves.
• If the plant doesn’t get enough light, it may not flower. An east- or north-facing window is ideal, or you can use artificial grow lights.
Watering:
• Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Goldfish plants prefer to stay evenly moist but not waterlogged.
• Avoid letting the soil completely dry out or allowing the plant to sit in water, as this can cause root rot.
• Reduce watering slightly in the winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
Humidity:
• Goldfish plants thrive in high humidity. Aim for humidity levels above 50%.
• Mist the plant regularly, place it on a humidity tray, or use a humidifier, especially during the winter or in dry environments.
Temperature:
• The ideal temperature for goldfish plants is between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C).
• Keep them away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature fluctuations, as they are sensitive to extremes.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining, lightweight potting mix. A mix designed for African violets works well, as it promotes good aeration and drainage.
Fertilizer:
• Feed your goldfish plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks.
• Stop fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
Pruning:
• Regular pruning encourages a fuller, bushier plant and can increase flowering. Trim back any leggy growth or remove dead stems and leaves.
• After flowering, lightly trim the plant to shape it.
Repotting:
• Repot your goldfish plant every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound. Use a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one, as these plants prefer slightly cramped conditions.
• Spring is the best time to repot.
Pest Control:
• Watch for common houseplant pests like aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. Wipe the leaves regularly and inspect the plant for any signs of infestation.
• Treat pests with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
Flowering:
• Goldfish plants typically bloom in the warmer months. To encourage flowering, make sure it receives enough bright light and humidity, and feed it during the growing season.
• Deadhead (remove) spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
