Pothos Jade 4”
Pothos Jade 4”
Light:
• Bright, indirect light is ideal for Jade Pothos. However, this plant is very tolerant of low-light conditions and can thrive in shaded areas of your home.
• It can also handle fluorescent lighting, making it a great choice for offices. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering:
• Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Jade Pothos prefers slightly dry conditions over being constantly wet.
• Water thoroughly, allowing the excess water to drain from the bottom of the pot. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot from water sitting in the soil.
Humidity:
• Jade Pothos thrives in average household humidity (40-60%). It is adaptable and doesn’t require high humidity levels, but it will benefit from occasional misting, especially in drier environments.
• During the winter months, if the air is particularly dry, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a humidity tray.
Temperature:
• Ideal temperatures for Jade Pothos are between 60°F and 85°F. It doesn’t tolerate cold temperatures well, so avoid exposing it to temperatures below 50°F.
• Keep the plant away from cold drafts, air conditioners, or heating vents.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining potting mix. A general-purpose potting mix with added perlite or sand for extra drainage works well.
• Ensure that the pot has drainage holes to prevent the roots from sitting in water, which can cause root rot.
Fertilizer:
• Feed Jade Pothos with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
• Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
Pruning:
• Prune regularly to maintain the desired shape and size. Trim back leggy vines or any damaged, yellow, or dead leaves.
• Pruning encourages bushier growth and helps prevent the plant from becoming too leggy, especially in lower light conditions.
Repotting:
• Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Jade Pothos doesn’t mind being slightly root-bound, but repotting allows it to grow more vigorously.
• Choose a pot that’s 1-2 inches larger than the current one, and always use fresh potting mix.
Pest Control:
• Jade Pothos is generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract spider mites, mealybugs, or scale.
• Inspect the plant regularly, especially under the leaves, and treat any infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Common Issues:
• Yellowing leaves: This is often a sign of overwatering. Make sure the soil dries out between waterings and that the pot has good drainage.
• Brown leaf tips: This can indicate underwatering or low humidity. Adjust your watering schedule or increase humidity if needed.
• Leggy growth: This usually happens when the plant isn’t getting enough light. Move the plant to a brighter location to encourage fuller growth.
Propagation:
• Jade Pothos is easy to propagate through stem cuttings. Cut a vine below a node (the area where a leaf meets the stem) and place the cutting in water or soil.
• If rooting in water, change the water every few days. Once the roots grow to about 2 inches long, you can plant the cutting in soil.
Trailing or Climbing:
• Jade Pothos can be grown as a trailing plant in hanging baskets, on shelves, or in containers where the vines can cascade.
• Alternatively, you can provide a trellis or moss pole to encourage it to climb, which will promote larger leaves and stronger growth.
General Tips:
• Rotate the plant every few weeks to ensure even growth and prevent it from leaning toward the light.
• Wipe the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow the plant to photosynthesize more effectively.
