Hoya 4”

Hoya 4”

Light:

Hoyas thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially in the morning or late afternoon, but too much can burn their leaves.

Insufficient light will slow down growth and reduce the chance of flowering. A bright east- or west-facing window is ideal.

Watering:

Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Hoyas prefer being on the drier side, as they are semi-succulent and can store water in their leaves.

Water thoroughly, then let the water drain out completely. Be sure not to let the plant sit in water, as this can lead to root rot.

In winter, reduce watering since the plant’s growth slows down.

Humidity:

Hoyas appreciate moderate to high humidity, though they are quite adaptable to average indoor humidity.

If the air in your home is particularly dry, especially in winter, you can mist the plant, use a humidity tray, or place it near a humidifier.

Temperature:

Ideal temperatures for Hoyas are between 60°F and 80°F (16°C to 27°C).

They do not tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C), so keep them away from cold windows or air conditioning vents.

Soil:

Use a well-draining potting mix. A blend of orchid bark, perlite, and peat works well, as Hoyas prefer an airy mix.

Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent excess moisture buildup.

Fertilizer:

Feed the plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks.

Do not fertilize in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.

Pruning:

Pruning is not essential but can help control the plant’s shape and promote bushier growth.

Do not remove the long, leafless stems (called peduncles) where flowers form, as Hoyas bloom repeatedly from these spots.

Repotting:

Hoyas like to be slightly root-bound, so they don’t need frequent repotting. Repot every 2-3 years, or when you see roots growing out of the drainage holes.

Spring is the best time to repot. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one.

Encouraging Blooms:

Hoyas bloom best when slightly pot-bound and when receiving plenty of bright light.

Some species of Hoya may take a few years to bloom, but once they start, they tend to flower regularly. Don’t be discouraged if your Hoya doesn’t bloom right away.

Pest Control:

Hoyas are relatively pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites.

Inspect your plant regularly, especially under the leaves, and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Propagation:

Hoyas are easy to propagate through stem cuttings. Cut a stem with at least one node and place it in water or a moist potting mix to root. They will root easily within a few weeks.
