Light Requirements

• Norfolk Island Pines prefer bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where it can get filtered sunlight. They can tolerate low light, but it may lead to slower growth and leggier stems.

• Avoid direct midday sun, as it can scorch the delicate needles. If natural light is limited, you may use grow lights to supplement.

Watering

• Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Water deeply, allowing excess water to drain out.

• In winter, reduce watering slightly as growth slows, but don’t let the soil completely dry out.

Humidity and Temperature

• Norfolk Island Pines need moderate to high humidity, especially indoors where dry air can cause needle drop. Misting the plant regularly or placing a humidifier nearby can help.

• They thrive in temperatures between 60-75°F. Avoid placing them near drafts, heaters, or air conditioning vents, as sudden temperature changes can stress the plant.

Soil

• Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally a mix formulated for houseplants or with added sand or perlite for improved drainage.

• Norfolk Island Pines are sensitive to soggy conditions, so make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing

• Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

• Avoid over-fertilizing, as this plant grows slowly and doesn’t need much extra nutrients. No fertilizer is needed in the fall and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

• Pruning is generally not necessary, as Norfolk Island Pines maintain a natural, symmetrical shape. However, you can trim brown or dead branches to keep it looking tidy.

• Avoid cutting the main stem or the top of the plant, as this can disrupt its growth and symmetry.

Repotting

• Repot every 2-3 years, or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that’s only one size larger than the current one, as a pot that’s too large can retain too much moisture.

• Repotting is best done in spring, using fresh potting mix to replenish nutrients.

Pests and Issues

• Norfolk Island Pines are generally pest-resistant but can sometimes attract spider mites, especially in dry conditions. Regularly misting or wiping the needles can help prevent this.
