Rex Begonia 4"
Rex Begonia 4"
Light:
• Rex Begonias prefer bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves and fade their colors.
• They can tolerate lower light conditions, but this may result in less vibrant leaf coloration and slower growth.
Watering:
• Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Rex Begonias prefer to stay on the drier side, so it’s better to underwater than overwater.
• Use room temperature water, and ensure that the pot has good drainage to avoid root rot. Excess moisture can lead to fungal issues.
Humidity:
• Rex Begonias thrive in high humidity (50% or higher). If your home is dry, especially in winter, consider using a humidifier or placing a pebble tray with water beneath the plant.
• Regular misting can help increase humidity levels, but avoid getting water on the leaves to prevent leaf spots.
Temperature:
• The ideal temperature range for Rex Begonias is between 65°F and 75°F. They prefer a stable environment and should be kept away from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.
• Avoid temperatures below 60°F, as this can stress the plant.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture but allows excess water to drain away. A mix designed for houseplants, combined with perlite or orchid bark, works well.
• Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom.
Fertilizer:
• Feed your Rex Begonia every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength.
• Reduce or stop fertilizing during fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
Pruning:
• Regularly prune any dead or yellowing leaves to maintain a healthy appearance and encourage new growth.
• Trim back leggy growth to promote a fuller shape.
Repotting:
• Repot your Rex Begonia every 1-2 years, or when it becomes root-bound. Spring is the best time to repot.
• Choose a pot that is slightly larger than the current one and refresh the soil to ensure good drainage and nutrient content.
Pest Control:
• Rex Begonias can occasionally attract pests such as aphids, spider mites, or mealybugs. Regularly check the undersides of the leaves for any signs of infestation.
• Treat any pest issues promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Common Issues:
• Yellowing leaves: This can be a sign of overwatering or underwatering. Adjust your watering routine as needed.
• Browning leaf edges: This often indicates low humidity or underwatering. Increase humidity and ensure consistent watering.
• Leggy growth: If your plant is becoming leggy, it may need more light. Move it to a brighter location with filtered light.
Propagation:
• Rex Begonias can be propagated through leaf cuttings or stem cuttings.
• To propagate by leaf cutting, take a healthy leaf and cut it into sections, ensuring each section has a vein. Place the cuttings in water or moist soil until roots develop.
• You can also propagate by division during repotting if the plant has multiple stems.
Display:
• Rex Begonias are often grown for their ornamental foliage, so consider using decorative pots or arrangements to showcase their beauty.
• These plants can be a stunning focal point in any indoor space.
General Tips:
• Rotate the plant periodically to ensure even growth and prevent it from leaning toward the light source.
• Clean the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow the plant to photosynthesize effectively.
