Snake Plant- Fernwood 10”

Light Requirements

Snake Plants can tolerate a wide range of light conditions, from low to bright indirect light. They grow best in bright, indirect sunlight but will do fine in low-light areas.

Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch their leaves, especially in hot climates.

Watering

Snake Plants are drought-tolerant and prefer their soil to dry out between waterings. Water only when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry.

Overwatering is one of the few ways to harm a Snake Plant, as they are susceptible to root rot. In winter, reduce watering frequency as growth slows.

Soil

Use a well-draining, gritty potting mix, like a cactus or succulent mix. This helps prevent water from sitting in the soil and causing root rot.

Make sure the pot has drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

Humidity and Temperature

Snake Plants do well in average indoor humidity and can tolerate dry air, making them ideal for most indoor environments.

They prefer temperatures between 60-85°F. Avoid placing them in areas where temperatures may drop below 50°F, as they are sensitive to frost.

Fertilizing

Fertilize sparingly. Feed with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once or twice during the growing season (spring and summer).

Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

Pruning

Pruning isn’t necessary for Snake Plants, but you can trim away any damaged, yellow, or dead leaves to keep the plant looking tidy.

If your Snake Plant becomes too tall or dense, you can divide the plant to create new plants (see propagation below).

Repotting

Snake Plants are slow-growing and only need repotting every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.

Choose a pot that’s only slightly larger than the current one to avoid excess soil, which can retain moisture.

Propagation

Snake Plants are easy to propagate through division or leaf cuttings. For division, simply separate a cluster of leaves with roots attached and pot it in fresh soil.

For leaf cuttings, cut a healthy leaf into several sections, let them dry for a day, and then place the ends in soil. New roots and leaves will develop over time.

Pests and Issues

Snake Plants are generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites. Check the leaves regularly, and if you see pests, treat them with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Yellowing leaves are often a sign of overwatering, so if you notice this, let the soil dry out and adjust your watering schedule.
