Snake Plant - Whale Fin 6"
Snake Plant - Whale Fin 6"
Light:
• Bright, Indirect Light: The Whale Fin prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate low light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering:
• Infrequent Watering: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Typically, this means watering every 2-4 weeks, depending on the season and humidity. In winter, reduce watering frequency, as the plant is dormant.
Humidity:
• Average to Low Humidity: The Whale Fin is adaptable and can thrive in average household humidity (30-50%). It tolerates drier conditions well.
Temperature:
• Moderate Temperatures: Ideal temperatures range from 60°F to 80°F. Protect the plant from temperatures below 50°F and avoid cold drafts.
Soil:
• Well-Draining Potting Mix: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix. You can also create your own by mixing regular potting soil with perlite or coarse sand.
Fertilization:
• Minimal Fertilization: Fertilize sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Avoid fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
Repotting:
• Every 2-3 Years: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes.
Pests:
• Monitor for Pests: While relatively pest-resistant, keep an eye out for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale insects. Treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Propagation:
• Offsets or Leaf Cuttings: Propagation can be done through offsets or leaf cuttings. For leaf cuttings, allow the cut end to callous before planting in well-draining soil.
Additional Tips:
• Toxicity: Like other snake plants, ‘Whale Fin’ is mildly toxic to pets if ingested, so keep it out of reach of curious animals.
