String of Hearts Silver Glory 6”

String of Hearts Silver Glory 6”

Light Requirements

String of Hearts loves bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where it can get plenty of filtered sunlight.

It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially morning sun, which can enhance the color and variegation of its leaves. However, avoid harsh afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Water sparingly, as this plant is semi-succulent and stores water in its leaves and stems. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.

During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently but always ensure the soil is dry before the next watering. In the winter, reduce watering even further.

Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably a cactus or succulent mix. Adding perlite or sand to regular potting soil can help improve drainage.

Avoid heavy, moisture-retentive soils, as they can lead to root rot.

Humidity and Temperature

String of Hearts does well in average indoor humidity but can tolerate low humidity thanks to its semi-succulent nature.

It prefers temperatures between 65-80°F. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F, as it is not frost-tolerant.

Fertilizing

Feed the plant with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

Avoid over-fertilizing and stop fertilizing altogether during the fall and winter when growth slows.

Pruning and Propagation

Trim back leggy vines or any discolored leaves to encourage fuller growth. Pruning can also help maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming too long.

String of Hearts is easy to propagate. Simply cut a healthy vine and place the cut end in water or soil, where it will root and start growing.

Pot and Repotting

Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom, as the roots are prone to rot.

Repotting is typically only needed every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. When repotting, choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one to avoid too much excess soil, which can hold moisture.

Pests and Issues

String of Hearts is generally resistant to pests, but it may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Check the leaves regularly, especially where they meet the stems.

If you spot pests, treat with insecticidal soap or wipe down the affected areas with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.
