The White Velvet Plant (Tradescantia sillamontana), also called Cobweb Spiderwort, is a unique, drought-tolerant plant with fuzzy, silvery-white leaves. Here’s how to care for it properly:
Light
• Thrives in bright, indirect light to partial sun.
• Can tolerate direct sun but may need acclimation to prevent scorching.
• In lower light, it may become leggy.
Watering
• Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
• In spring and summer, water every 1–2 weeks.
• Reduce watering in fall and winter to prevent root rot.
Soil
• Prefers well-draining soil, such as cactus or succulent mix.
• Adding perlite or sand helps improve drainage.
Temperature & Humidity
• Ideal temperature: 60–80°F
• Can tolerate some dryness but dislikes high humidity.
• Keep away from cold drafts and frost.
Fertilizing
• Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (diluted to half strength) once a month during the growing season.
• No fertilization needed in winter.
Pruning & Growth
• Can grow 6–12 inches tall and spread widely.
• Trim leggy stems to encourage bushier growth.
Propagation
• Easily propagated from stem cuttings.
• Let cuttings dry for a few hours before planting in dry soil.
Toxicity
• Mildly toxic to pets if ingested.
• The fuzzy leaves can cause slight skin irritation in some people.
